What type of washing machine? 

First of all consider where you're putting your machine as there are a number of options and sizes including:

* Front Load is good for fitting under worktops and easily accessible;
* Top Loading have a larger drum capacity but need more space such as in a utility room or garage;
* Integrated can be concealed neatly behind a cupboard door, and;
* Washer/Driers are a good space saver but you lose the option of simultaneous washing and drying.

Washing machine performance 

An important consideration when choosing a washing machine is its performance grading. All machines are graded 'A-E'. 'A' being the more effective, and 'AAA' being the creme de la creme!

Grades are applied to a number of features:

* Wash Performance for its effectiveness at cleaning and removing stubborn stains;
* Energy Efficiency, according to the amount of water and electricity it uses, and;
* Spin Speed, the faster the rotations, the more water is extracted and the quicker the drying time.

Most machines are now cold fill only, which is gentler on fabrics and better for stain removal; it's also more energy efficient, and in fact energy ratings are determined on cold fill only.

Washing programmes and features 

The common programmes are for cottons, synthetics, delicates and woollens. More sophisticated machines will have extra options such as hand washing for wools and silks, pre-wash for heavily soiled items, short wash, half load for economical washing and rinse hold. Temperatures and spin speed may also be adjustable giving you more flexible washing options.

Spin speed 

Programmes will have an automatic spin speed, however, you may be able to adjust this. Most machines have a minimum of 2 spin speeds: 400-800 rpm for synthetics and delicates and 1,000 to 1,800 rpm for cottons. The faster the spin, the drier the washing will be. This is especially economical if it's going on to be tumble dried.

All machines will try to balance the laundry load before the main spin cycle or reduce the speed for safety.

Capacity 

Drum capacities vary greatly so think about your washing needs.

Energy efficiency and the environment 

All machines will have an energy efficiency and a performance grading A - G, with A being the most economical. Standardised tests, monitored by Trading Standards, are carried out across the industry and manufacturers are responsible for grading their own machines.

Performance is based on washing performance and spin efficiency. You will generally find that the more expensive the machine, the higher its grading as it will include a number of energy saving features, eg. a timer delay will allow you to use cheaper overnight electricity and variable temperature controls allow you to use lower temperature for lightly soiled loads. Most machines incorporate a pressure switch mechanism and automatically use the correct amount of water for the load; others will have a half load facility for small quantities of laundry.

Fuzzy Logic (some manufacturers use a different term to describe this feature) means that the machine uses advanced electronic technology to monitor conditions during the wash and make any adjustments required to get optimum cleaning performance using minimum water and energy; it can influence the main wash, water intake, temperature settings, wash time, rinse performance and spin speed. Many machines with Fuzzy Logic earn AA or AAA energy efficiency gradings.

Installation 

Before installing the washing machine, remove the delivery straps, they're usually at the back of the machine. The machine may need to be levelled by rotating the feet underneath to adjust the height.

If you are fitting the machine yourself, we advise that you refer to the instructions included. We recommend that the plumbing's made easily accessible, in case of emergency. Take care not to squash or twist the hose as the machine is pushed back into place.
